Music in Capoeira

Here I'm going to try to collect my actual favorite capoeira songs. Usually, it changes every month, but some of them stay with me for years.

Leva eu meu mano, eu também quero ir.
Se vocé não me levar vou ficando por aqui.

Por aqui por ali

Vou ficando por aqui

Take me my brother, I also want to go.
If you don't take me, I'll stay here.

Over here over there

I'm staying here

Santo António eu quero água

Santo António eu quero água

Quero água pra beber
Quero água pra lavar
Quero água pra benzer
Quero água

Saint Anthony I want water

Saint Anthony I want water

I want water to drink
I want water to wash
I want water to bless with
I want water

Mandá leco, Cajueiro,

É de Mandá leco

Mandá Loiááá
Cajueiro

He was sent to the Cashew tree

I send you to the Cashew tree.

Go and find him there, under the Cashew tree

Cajueiro means Cashew tree and it was an important source of nutrition for the slaves in brazil during the Colonial Period (1500 - 1814).
Cashew (Caju) was full of vitamin C and iron so it was considered as a medicine for sick slaves.

Also, many slaves preferred to sleep outside under cashew trees, rather than stay in the slave quarters where there were terrible conditions of comfort and hygiene.

Therefore often, when somebody was searching for a black slave and didn't find him, he was probably under a cashew tree.

Vai você, Vai você
Dona Maria, como vai você

Joga bonito que eu quero ver
Dona Maria, como vai você

Joga com calma que eu quero aprender
Dona Maria, como vai você

Como vai, como passa,
Como vai vomice?
Dona Maria, como vai você

How do you do, how do you do?
Holy Maria how do you do?

Play beautiful, because I like to watch
Holy Maria how do you do?

Play carefully, because I like to learn
Holy Maria how do you do?

How do you do,

Holy Maria how do you do?
